IVF as Art

As someone who experienced many challenges with regard to fertility, I was inspired to find a way to honor my experience and journey using my fine art and I’d like to share that with you in this post.

While I realize it’s a unique experience for each person who goes through using medically supported means of conceiving a child, IVF and everything leading up to it was both physically and mentally challenging for our family, required a significant financial investment and took a tremendous amount of time and energy.  

For those of us who are fortunate enough to have success with the process, it is truly awesome to witness the results unfold in front of our eyes.

Creating and displaying this art piece felt like a way to honor our journey and to focus on what was beautiful about it, rather than let the challenges take center stage.  

I created a piece of my own daughter’s beginning stages as mere cells before we transferred her as an embryo. I included colors that I wanted to incorporate into my nursery and symbolism that felt meaningful. I look forward to being able to show my daughter the very beginning stages of her life interpreted in this way.

The piece shown is 30x40 bees wax, resin, pigments, photography on birch panel.

I am extremely passionate about creating this commissioned art for parents who went through IVF to conceive a child. 

The IVF art I am creating for clients is inspired by the journey and the magic of being able to see imagery of your child as just a few cells. This is just incredible to me.

In addition to the reward of a baby, this art piece felt cathartic to make and also to display on my daughter’s nursery wall.

Maternity Portraits with your dog in Austin, Texas {Austin, TX and Santa Fe, NM children and pet photographer}

I recently had the fortune of creating maternity portraits for a couple and their dog here in Austin, Texas. We had a fun outdoor location in mind in Austin, but the weather wasn't cooperating. As a result, I ended up photographing Ashley and her husband Brad and their genuinely perfect and chocolate lab, Muddy, in their home. Ashley and Brad are expecting their first baby in March and they couldn't have been more excited to capture this special time in their lives; a time of hope and boundless anticipation. (After all, it won't be just the three of them for much longer!) The home location, Ashley later expressed to me, was vastly more meaningful and personal to them and shared with me that she was glad we had held the session in that environment. Brad had purchased his little girl some cowgirl boots and tiny slippers that he wished to incorporate into the session and I gladly collaborated with him on it. I know for a fact that this couple will look at the images taken from this session and remember just how they felt on that day, during that specific time in their lives. That's powerful to me. I love that they wanted images of their dog with them in their home as they consider her to be part of their family. They know that their home will change throughout the years as will their family and they value having these professional images created for them.  I even got to photograph their dog on the red chair that had been in Brad's family for generations. I know that meant a great deal to him. They invested in several large wall pieces that are now hanging in their home.

So–here's to Brad, Ashley, and Muddy. Wishing them all the best as they invite their new daughter into their lives, very shortly!

Family and Maternity Photography Austin and Santa Fe

family |ˈfam(ə)lē| can be defined several ways. I think a perfect way to describe family is connection. The concept of connection is a recurring theme in my photography and this maternity and family portrait session is all about the connection I love to capture. This family is powerfully loving and genuine; meeting them has honestly touched my life and inspired me.  Jeannine and Rich are expecting their second child this August and requested a session with me to capture this special time in their lives; a time wherein they are reflecting on the last four years spent with their first child, Kai , and their two beloved dogs; a time wherein they excitedly await the arrival of their new baby and enter into a new path together.

When Jeannine and I talked about her dreams for her session she expressed a desire to have photographs that captured the strong and intimate connection of their family. And so I focused my session with this concept in mind: connection between husband and wife, parent and child, mother and baby-to-be. It was quite clear when I arrived to Santa Fe, NM from Austin, TX for this session that this family was incredible.

I wanted the images to feel as serene and sweet as this family. I looked for ways to convey these feelings both indoors and out–We took a quick drive to a nearby field area, worked under their porch with some nice, soft light and also right in their living room on their cozy couch. (Oh,we took a few snack breaks in between, of course!) I used a combination of natural and studio lighting for the imagery and wanted to make sure they all expressed a soft feeling with emotion being the focus.

Jeannine and Rich were up for anything during the session and really encouraged me to lead the session however I felt was right for them. We spent a few hours together and I honestly could have continued photographing this family for many more... I'm so glad I was invited into their lives to capture this time.
